Banking

Transfers, cards, bank accounts, and app verification.

Which bank app setup issue wasted the most time for you as a foreigner here?

Not even asking which bank is best in theory. I mean the annoying real-life part like identity verification, phone number mismatch, transfer limits, certificate setup, remittance menus, or getting told to come back with one more document. If one bank was noticeably less painful lately, I'd love to hear it, especially for people sending money abroad sometimes.

What Korean banking feature stopped working at the worst possible time for you?

Usually everything feels fine until one specific thing suddenly does not work when you actually need it, sending money out, logging in abroad, getting a verification text, increasing a transfer limit, whatever it is. If a Korean bank account or banking app burned you at exactly the wrong moment, what was it and what was the fix in the end?

What Korea app or account problem looked fixable online and then still made you go in person?

This feels weirdly common here. Something looks almost solved in the app, until one identity check or account rule sends you back to a branch or store. What was that problem for you in Korea? Bank transfer limits, phone verification, ARC update, remittance setup, app registration, certificate issue, anything where online was only half the process.

If you had a gap in your ARC status, what still kept working in Korea and what died immediately?

I keep seeing people assume their bank account, debit card, phone number, and app logins will all behave the same, and then one part breaks first. If you had an ARC gap, left Korea for a bit, or came back on a new visa, what actually stayed usable for you and what shut off right away? Bank account, SIM, verification texts, online banking, anything like that.

Were you actually able to open a Korean bank account before your ARC came out?

I keep hearing completely different answers on this depending on the bank, branch, and who you talk to. If you tried to open a bank account in Korea before your ARC was issued, what happened in real life? Did they let you open a restricted account, reject it completely, or ask for some extra paper nobody mentioned online?

What Korean bank problem looked solvable in the app and then still sent you to a branch?

This keeps sounding like a Korea rite of passage. Everything looks almost usable until one limit, one certificate, or one identity check sends you back offline. What bank task fooled you like that here? Transfer limits, overseas remittance, ARC update, password reset, phone verification, dormant account issue, anything where the app was not the whole story.

If you moved out of Korea for a bit and came back later, what stopped working first?

I keep hearing mixed stories about this. Some people say their bank or phone setup stayed fine for months, other people say something quietly got frozen the second their visa status changed. If you actually left Korea for a stretch and came back later, what stopped working first? I am especially curious about real cases with banks, carriers, app logins, and identity verification.

Did your Korean bank suddenly get weird about transfers when your visa or ID details changed?

I keep hearing that this is where random banking problems start. Not full account closure, just weird stuff like lower transfer limits, app errors, or being told to visit a branch in person. If this happened to you in Korea, what changed first and which bank gave you the most trouble? I am more interested in the annoying real-life version than the official policy version.

Which bank has been the least painful for foreigners recently?

I need a basic account for salary, transfers, and app payments, and I’m trying to avoid the classic “come back with one more document” cycle. I keep hearing different things about Hana, KB, Woori, and NH depending on the branch. If you opened an account this year, which bank actually worked without making it weird? Bonus points if they were normal about name formatting and phone verification.
